750 Students Benefit from AI Training Partnership

In a significant development for Nigeria’s educational landscape, approximately 750 secondary school students across Lagos, Delta, and Ondo States have completed an intensive five-week Artificial Intelligence (AI) training program. This initiative, a collaboration between Project iCommunity, the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), and Chevron Nigeria Limited (CNL), aims to equip students with critical 21st-century skills in AI, machine learning, design thinking, problem-solving, and creativity.
Program Overview
The training, which commenced in 2023, was conducted in 15 schools—five in each of the three states. Each participating school enrolled 50 students, totaling 750 students who engaged in hands-on learning experiences and real-world problem-solving challenges. The curriculum was designed to foster creativity and innovation among students, preparing them for future careers in technology and related fields.
Student Achievements
The program culminated in a competition where students showcased their projects, demonstrating the practical applications of AI in addressing societal challenges. Notable projects included:
Badore Community High School (Lagos State): Developed “Attend AI,” a smart classroom attendance system using facial recognition technology.
Ilasan Senior Secondary School (Lagos State): Created “Smart Pajec,” an AI-powered classroom attendance system.
Gbara Community Senior Secondary School (Lagos State): Introduced “Edubot,” a virtual assistant utilizing AI to assist students with assignments.
St. Joseph’s College (Ondo State): Designed a “Student ID Authentication System” to enhance security within the school.
Ilaje High School Igbokoda (Ondo State): Developed a voice-enabled AI chatbot to assist students with information retrieval.
Stella Maris College Okitipupa (Ondo State): Created an interactive AI chatbot with advanced features to support student engagement.
Iwere College, Koko (Delta State): Developed “Dr. Derbi,” a virtual healthcare assistant to provide medical information and guidance.
Osadenis Mixed Secondary School (Delta State): Introduced “Ultimate Maths Quiz,” an AI-based platform for interactive mathematics learning.
Hussey College (Delta State): Created an “AI Smart Calculator” to assist students in solving complex mathematical problems.
Recognition and Awards
The top-performing schools received recognition for their innovative projects. Badore Community High School was awarded a N1 million cash prize and the “Attend AI” system for their first-place achievement. Other schools were honored with various AI tools and resources to further enhance their educational capabilities.
