Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, the lawmaker representing Kogi Central Senatorial District, has finally broken her silence on the reason for delaying her official resumption at the Nigerian Senate, following months of speculation and criticism.
In a public statement released via her verified social media handles and a brief press conference held in Abuja, Akpoti-Uduaghan explained that the delay was due to a combination of legal, health, and personal considerations that required her attention before fully assuming her senatorial duties.
Legal and Election Tribunal Proceedings
According to her, one of the major reasons for her delayed resumption was the prolonged legal battle over the legitimacy of her election victory.
“The people of Kogi Central gave me their mandate, but unfortunately, that mandate was contested at various legal levels. I had to stay the course of the legal process to ensure everything was properly resolved before stepping into the hallowed chambers,” Akpoti-Uduaghan said.
It can be recalled that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s victory in the February 2023 National Assembly election was hotly contested. Although she was declared the winner by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), the matter went through election petition tribunals and appellate courts before being conclusively resolved in her favor.
She emphasized that it would have been inappropriate to fully resume office while her legitimacy was still under question.
Health and Family Responsibilities
The senator also revealed that she faced health challenges that required immediate and prolonged attention. Without delving into specific medical details, she shared that the post-election stress took a toll on her physically and emotionally.
“Politics can be draining, especially when you’re a woman in a male-dominated space and you’re battling not just for a seat but also against systemic biases. I needed time to recuperate and attend to my family as well,” she stated.
Akpoti-Uduaghan is known for her passionate advocacy on women’s rights, energy reforms, and social development. Supporters have often praised her for balancing public service with her family life.
Focus on Strategic Planning
Another point highlighted was the need for proper strategic planning before jumping into legislative activities. She claimed that her team had spent the last few weeks conducting needs assessments and consultations with stakeholders in Kogi Central.
“I didn’t want to just resume for optics. I wanted to be ready — to hit the ground running with legislation and constituency projects that are impactful,” she explained.

Now officially resuming her duties at the Senate, Akpoti-Uduaghan has promised to prioritize issues such as rural electrification, youth empowerment, and security.
“The time for politics is over. Now is the time to work. I am committed to serving the people who elected me, and I will not let them down,” she declared.
