In a deeply disturbing and heartbreaking case that has shocked the nation, Nigerian gospel singer Oluwatimileyin Ajayi has been sentenced to death by hanging for the brutal murder of his girlfriend, Salome Adaidu, a 24-year-old National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) member.
The Gospel Singer Turned Killer
Oluwatimileyin Ajayi, once known for his inspiring gospel music and ministry, has now become the face of one of the most gruesome crimes in recent times. The 31-year-old artist from Nasarawa State was found guilty of killing and beheading his girlfriend, Salome, earlier this year in Karu Local Government Area.
Salome, a promising young woman serving her country under the NYSC program and working with NICON Insurance, had gone to visit Ajayi at his residence in the Papalanto area of New Karshi. Tragically, she never returned home.
The Shocking Discovery
The horror unfolded when the police arrested Ajayi while attempting to dispose of Salome’s severed head in a sack. Alongside the human remains, the authorities recovered a machete and a knife believed to have been used in the gruesome murder.
The evidence was overwhelming, including a chilling confessional statement written by Ajayi himself and presented to the court as Exhibit L.
Court Proceedings and Judgment
At the High Court sitting in Lafia, Justice Simon Aboki found Ajayi guilty of culpable homicide punishable by death under Section 221 of the Penal Code of Northern Nigeria.
Despite attempts by Ajayi’s defense counsel to argue that the confession was not voluntary and that the murder weapons lacked probative value, the court held firm. Justice Aboki ruled that the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt and sentenced Ajayi to death by hanging.
“The law is clear on this, and the punishment is death,” the judge declared solemnly.
