Devastating Floods Ravage Mokwa, Niger State: Death Toll Rises Amid Ongoing Rescue Efforts

A catastrophic flood has struck the town of Mokwa in Niger State, central Nigeria, resulting in significant loss of life and property. Triggered by torrential rains on the night of May 29, the deluge has claimed at least 36 lives, with many more feared missing as rescue operations continue.
Rising Death Toll and Destruction
Initial reports confirmed 21 fatalities, but the number has since risen to 36 as more bodies are recovered from the floodwaters. Among the deceased are 12 members of a single family, highlighting the tragedy’s severity. The floodwaters have submerged over 50 homes, displacing hundreds of residents who are now seeking shelter in schools, mosques, and public buildings.
Communities in Crisis
The hardest-hit areas include Tiffin Maza and Anguwan Hausawa communities. Eyewitnesses recount harrowing scenes of families being swept away and homes collapsing under the force of the water. The flood also disrupted transportation, cutting off the major highway linking northern and southern Nigeria, leading to severe traffic congestion and stranding travelers.
Emergency Response Efforts
The Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA), in collaboration with local authorities, divers, and volunteers, has been conducting search and rescue operations. So far, three individuals, including a woman and her two children, have been rescued and are receiving treatment for injuries and shock at Mokwa General Hospital.
Underlying Causes and Warnings
Flooding is a recurring issue in Nigeria, often exacerbated by inadequate drainage systems, construction on waterways, and improper waste disposal. The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) had previously issued warnings about potential flash floods in 15 states, including Niger State, between May 28 and 30.
