Buhari Commends Tinubu at Midterm, Urges Nigerians to Support Ongoing Reforms

*Abuja, May 28, 2025* — Former President Muhammadu Buhari has extended his congratulations to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on reaching the midpoint of his first term, commending his leadership and urging Nigerians to remain patient and supportive of the administration’s reform agenda.

In a statement released on Wednesday by his spokesperson, Mallam Garba Shehu, Buhari emphasized that effective leadership is a continuous journey requiring unity and endurance. He acknowledged the economic challenges currently facing Nigerians, particularly the most vulnerable, but stressed that these hardships are part of necessary reforms aimed at long-term improvement.

“Reforms take time to yield results. The task of reducing poverty and inflation, which have hit the poorest families the hardest, is immense and must not be left only for the government. The private sector and all of us as citizens must join in all ways we can,” Buhari stated.

Since assuming office in May 2023, President Tinubu has initiated several significant reforms, including the removal of fuel subsidies and efforts to unify the exchange rate. These measures aim to stabilize the economy and lay the groundwork for sustainable growth. While these policies have led to short-term economic strain, they are considered essential steps toward long-term recovery.

Buhari’s message comes at a time when the Tinubu administration is reflecting on its achievements and challenges over the past two years. Supporters highlight the groundwork being laid for long-term prosperity, while critics question the immediate impact on living standards.

Concluding his message, Buhari expressed his best wishes to President Tinubu: “I am wishing President Tinubu heartfelt congratulations on his two years in office. May you keep leading with wisdom and care.”
As Nigeria navigates its path toward economic stability and growth, the former president’s call for patience and collective effort underscores the importance of national unity in achieving the country’s development goals.
